WEEKEND WARRIOR: PART 14

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK : A GUIDE

THE FASHION

The banana clip or clamp is back, as seen at Alexander Wang – the show of the season, which took place in the old Conde Nast building (where he was an intern). Wang managed to capture the reign of chic and terror of fashion’s good old days – think The Devil Wears Prada. The look was very like Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love – slicked back hair and bold red lips.

This was to be his last show during the regular fashion week schedule. He will now be showcasing his collections in June and December, so it was a real treat to attend.

THE BEAUTY

Shattered metallic ombre nails were a major moment – as seen at Cushnie et Ochs, courtesy of the masterful work of Essie and manicurist Julie Kandalec.

MODEL OF THE MOMENT

Kaia Gerber was the model of the season. She looked INCREDIBLE in the Alexander Wang show.

CELEB MOMENT

A personal highlight was running into Whoopi Goldberg – a woman famous, not just for her acting abilities, but her incredible shoe collection!

PARTY OF THE SEASON

The Maybelline Party – chatting with models Afiya Bennett, Herieth Paul, Jourdan Dunn and getting into a selfie frenzy with Gigi Hadid!

IRISH GALS IN NYC

I have to mention the fabulous Irish girls doing so well in the big apple. Galway-native Michaela O’Shaughnessy, Teen Vogue Social Media Editor and Cork gal Samantha Barry, the new Editor-in-Chief of Glamour.

MY TOP TIP FOR CITY-GOERS

A neat little trick I learned for getting around is the Arro app. NYC taxi’s can be a nightmare, but no more. Literally tap and a taxi will come find you within minutes. A life-saver coming out of the shows and parties.

FOODIE HOTSPOT

The Blue Box Cafe at Tiffany’s on 5th Avenue was my chosen eatery. Everything inside was robin egg blue, it was like being inside a trademark Tiffany blue box. But, just a heads up – book beforehand and expect to pay about $30 for your brekkie!

IRREPLACEABLE YOU

Abbie and Sam, a couple who have been meant for each other since childhood, face a terrible reality when Abbie is diagnosed with cancer. Aware that Sam has never been on one single date, she attempts to find someone for him and plan out his life, before her own comes to an end. Hilarity and tragedy ensue.

Actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw – yes Kelly, from the acclaimed and beloved San Junipero episode of Black Mirror – takes on Abbie with a sweet humour that somehow turns the tragic tale into one of love.

It’s a tear-jerker, for sure, but you’ll laugh through the tears!

Backed with a fabulous core cast of Steve Coogan, Christopher Walken and Kate McKinnon, this isn’t a run-of-the mill dramedy. Special mention to SNL’s powerhouse comedian Kate McKinnon, who’s straight-faced comedic style always adds much-needed freshness to anything she makes an appearance in.

I think we all sadly know someone who’s been affected by this terrible disease? breast cancer  sentenced my sister Tricia to death – a young woman in her 20’s. Though, I’m so glad of the time we had when my sister was terminal. The smallest moments made magical memories. The smallest acts of kindness are engraved in my heart forever. Family, friends – even strangers – will surprise you with the kind of love that you didn’t imagine was even possible, so I still hold onto that love very tightly.

Irreplaceable You is out now, exclusively on Netflix.
